Hair Update

Hey Beauties!

For the past month I've had my hair in crochet twist. I love the look and am constantly getting compliments. Everyone thinks it's either my real hair or that I'm dreading up my hair. And for 11 weeks post I have a decent amount of new growth. I'll actually post a picture of my hair in a few weeks when I get my hands on a better camera.

I haven't really been following a regimen since having these twist in. All I've been doing it oiling my scalp with either Castor Oil or Coconut Oil when needed and spritzing my new growth whenever needed. I've run out of my MSM supplements and noticed that my new growth is extremely hard. I know it's not dry but it feels that way, but I guess it's because that is the natural texture of my hair. The MSM supplements really did change my hair texture but for the better.

This past Friday I washed the top part of my hair because I felt like I had a lot of build up. It is also the easiest to clean because that is were the individual twist are located. The rest of my hair is in a zigzag pattern and the twist are crocheted into the braids. After washing I sprayed my new growth with a mixture of my Garnier Leave-In Conditioner and drinking water. I then sealed it with Coconut Oil.

I can't wait until I can take these twist out and get my relaxer. I feel like I haven't seen my hair since my May relaxer because I have been wearing protective styles almost every day. I have no idea where my hair is right now and maybe that is a good thing.

Update: Supplements

Hey Beauties!!!

How are all of you doing this wonderful morning? I hope well! I'm just very tired with a lot to do today, but I wanted to give you a quick update.

I didn't cowash my hair last night because I straightened it over the weekend and my hair seemed to not be breaking and shedding as much as it was in the past so I didn't want to jinx that. But my scalp felt so dry and thirsty that I had to cowash this morning. I used my normal V05 Moisture Milks, but for my final rinse I used my Cantu Shea Butter Conditioner. That was because my hair felt striped and very dry. I'm not sure why it feels that way when washing, I think I might need to get new products.

I detangled with my jilbere shower comb as  I moisturized and sealed my hair with my Cantu Shea Butter Leave-in and my Hair Plus Natural Product Oil. Strands of hair were breaking so I absolutely know I am at the point where my hair needs to go away. Over the weekend I will be cornrowing my hair and wearing a wig for the rest of the month.

New topic: Two days ago I went to Walmart and bought some supplements. As you know I posted about MSM and its benefits and now I have it. I bout the Spring Valley brand that is 1000 mg. I only took 1000 mg the first day and 2000 mg yesterday. I also bought One A Day Women's because I know my body is lacking in Vitamins and minerals. I don't get enough because I am always studying and don't really eat the way I should. So this will give the the essentials that my body needs and hopefully give me a boost of energy.

Sulfur for hair?

Hello Beauties!!!

Past few days I have been looking up the benefits of sulfur for the hair and there have been a lot. Sulfur is essential in maintaining the structures of protein in our bodies, like keratin. It also helps in the formation of immunoglobulins, so it is helping strengthen our immune systems (Internet Arthritis Center). Sulfur is also needed to keep our hair looking glossy (MSM & Hair Growth). The most commonly used form of sulfur that I have come across is MSM. MSM is short for Methylsulfonylmethane, which is a biologically active form of sulfur. It is naturally found in our bodies, but in many cases we are deficient in it, and sulfur (Internet Arthritis Center).

MSM aids in beautiful hair because it has been proven to stimulate scalp circulation, and from all your research you should know that a healthy head of hair requires a good circulation of blood nourishing it with all the vitamins and minerals it needs (MSM & Hair Growth). That is the reason why we take time out of our day to massage it. MSM has also shown to lengthen the growth phase, anagen phase, of hair (Hairfinity). That means your hair will be growing for a longer than normal period and with other healthy hair practices you will be able to see significant changes. So if your growth phase is increased to 2 years then by the time your hair enters its resting and shedding phases it would have growth approximately 12 inches (Hairfinity).

There has not yet been a dosage amount set for the use of MSM because it is considered safe to use. The common intake is about 1,000 mg to 3,000 mg of MSM daily (MSM & Hair Growth). I personally would recommend not starting with too high of a dosage. Yeah you may be very eager to try out MSM but it may be in your best interest to actually start of low just so that you can get your body accustomed to the elevated levels of sulfur.

Trial Studies
A trial was conducted by Ronald M. Lawrence, M.D., Ph.D. The trial showed that 100% of those subjects who where on Lignisul MSM had an increase in hair growth compared to those who where given the placebo. And 50% of the subjects given Lignisul MSM, compared to the control group, had an increase in nail length and nail thickness growth. Dr. Lawrence concluded that "oral supplementation with Lignisul MSM is a valuable addition to hair and nail growth. Hair and nail health was significantly improved in a short term of six weeks. If the trials were continued for eight to sixteen weeks, the results would have been even better for those on Lignisul" (Lindberg).

My Conclusions
Because of these reasons and many more I have decided that I want to add MSM to the regimen. Supplements will be very essential for my healthy hair growth, especially since I'm in college and never seem to find time to actually eat food. Adding vitamins and other supplements will help in not only my hair but most importantly my nutrition and body. The only downside is that I hate taking pills on a regular basis, so hopefully I won't forgot to take them.
