Right now I am having a hair impulse and going through with it.... I coloring my hair and it's not brown.

For the past week I have been itching to do something different with my hair and today I have caved in. Right now I am in the process of removing my twists that I had in for the past month and will be coloring my hair with L'Oreal Excellence HiColor HiLights in Golden Blonde. The goal is to lighten my hair enough so that when I put on a rinse or semi-permanent color it will show up.

I am excited but at the same time really nervous. <strike>I will be documenting this so that post will be up sometime tomorrow.</strike>

Wish me luck.
Hey Beauties!

I know a while back I told you all that I bought some Indian hair, but I didn't tell you from who. I didn't forget about you, I just wanted to try the hair out a bit longer. After years of stalking the website I finally decided to create an account and purchase some hair, and I am not dissatisfied at all!!!!

I absolutely love this hair and have been wearing it for a little over a week. The hair is keeping up very well and it doesn't tangle as much as Beauty Supply Hair. In my case, when the hair begins to tangle it is trying to tell you that it is time for a wash.

I've cowashed and shampoo washed (using shea moisture and tresemee shampoos) and the hair has not reacted negatively. I've deep condition the hair using Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition, and did a protein treatment using Silicone Mix. I believe that the Silicone Mix conditioner also helped bring the hair back to it's original state.

After one month the hair has remained so soft, but I will keep you all posted as time goes on. I would definitely recommend this hair to anyone who is new to Indian Hair and would like to try it out at a good price.

I would also suggest making an account before purchasing the hair because you can get points that can be used as discounts on your next purchase. You first get 10 points for making an account and for every day after that when you sign in you get one point. For every 10 points you make you can get a dollar off your entire purchase. If you would like to sign up for an account please click here.

Specifics on the Hair

I ordered 2 bundles of hair along with 3 packs of the Wig Accessory Combination and only paid $94.50 because I had free shipping and discounts.
Hey Beauties!

As you know I chopped of all of my hair last week. Thinking about how short my hair is now made me so sad and I absolutely regretted the decision. But now I'm no longer sad. Mainly because I am wearing a wig I made so I don't see my hair, and partially because it's just hair. My hair will grow back!

My leave out seems a lot thicker than before when straightened and I love that. The only thing I really dislike is that my leave out is so short that it's hard to blend properly with the wig. Whenever I find the time I need to straighten my entire head and even out the cut and hopefully that will help with the blending. If my hair decides to work with me this go around then I should be APL again this time next year, but will much fuller and thicker hair!

BRING ON THE HAIR HEALTH!!!!

It's been a while since I've written to you all so here is a little update:

My hair has been a bit of a hassle these past few months so I made a BIG change, which will be the focus of this post. I also bought my first virgin Indian hair, but I'm not sure how "virgin" it is so I think it is actually consider 100% Remy Indian Hair. I'll post you guys up on that at a later time.

The BIG Change
...... Well last night I cut off all my hair! I still can't believe that I did it and I don't know how to feel about it. I can no longer get my hair into a pony tail and I'm not much for wearing a fro 24/7. This is something I'm going to have to get used to.

Oh don't think that I am natural. I am still texlaxed but my hair is still very curlie/textured. After chopping of my bone straight ends I feel like my texlaxed hair is a bit bushy so I need to figure out ways to deal with and style my hair until it gets to a length that I am comfortable with.

Why????
Some of you may be wondering why I decided to chop off so much hair. Well if any of you can remember, last year my hair all of a sudded got really thin in the back and I've been trying to recover from that. I think the two biggest contributors to the thinning where stress from school and poor nutrition.

As my hair grew and I continued to texlax (for almost a year) my relaxed ends kept breaking and you couldn't see any progress in length. I was not satisfied with the way my hair looked. I hated that every time I did my hair after washing it I would have piles and piles of bone straight ends all over the bathroom floor as well as in the shower.

My hair was not in a healthy state so I had to make a decision. Since the beginning of my hair journey I said that I value health over length and last night I had to prove to myself and everyone else that I really meant that. I was disappointed as I was cutting my hair off, but I knew it needed to be done which pushed me all the more.

Now what?
I'm actually not too sure. I'll just continue texlaxing my hair. I might have to come up with a different technique because the front of my hair is straighter than the back. I might try doing my texlaxes in parts and see how that works out. I have no idea how to style my hair so I most likely will be wearing the wig I made.

I am now on a new hair journey which will have its own new challenges. There will be many ups and downs but I'm excited. I will keep you all updated on the condition and health of my hair.

I have decided to take a short break for rest of August and possibly some of September. I am currently in the process of moving multiple times and starting the Fall School Semester so things are very hectic at the moment. I don't not have the time effectivley for my hair at the moment. I will still be doing the basics like washing and moisturizing, but I won't be doing it as often as I would like. Also my new installment of the Monthly Calendars will be put on pause as well.

Still come by the blog and read older posts that I'm sure will be helpful in some way. Whenever I do find any interesting hair videos or articles I'll share them will you all during my break so be sure to check those out as well.

Bye for now!

I have finally found the butter to my bread ..... well in the case of healthy hair. You may know that I am currently transitioning to texlaxed hair so I have different textures of hair that can become very difficult to handle. As we all know breakage is the enemy to long healthy hair so we try to avoid it like the plague, but that can be extremely hard with transitioning hair.

On and off I've tried a new mixture for my deep conditioning process and every time my hair easy to detangle when compared to the wash days when I didn't use it. My deep conditioning mixture consists of Main 'n Tail Conditioner, LeKair Cholesterol Plus, and most recently Castor Oil.

I absolutely love this!!! My hair feels so good afterward and both my comb and brush run through my hair so easily cause the least amount of breakage/shedding that I've ever had. This will be staying in my regimen!

If you end up trying this out, leave me a comment with your experience. Both the good and the bad are welcomed.
Here is the first Hair Calendar. In the upcoming months I will be changing the format of the calendar to find out which will be easier to read and follow.

Looking back at July I see that I could have done much better with my hair. I should have taken my vitamins more consistently as well as not allow school to make me sleep without a sleeping cap. That is why I am giving myself a C for July 2012. For August my goals are to take my vitamins daily, wrap my hair when I'm not doing anything, and moisturize and seal daily.Sanley The Sapfirehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05330885677840069639noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2640145457310446313.post-17013886986655499112012-07-25T12:02:00.001-04:002012-07-25T13:36:55.548-04:00July 2012 Relaxer ProcessI know that I was already supposed to have my Relaxer Process posted, but I had an Organic Chemistry exam that I absolutely had to study for. Now that is out of the way I have a little time before I have to study for my final exam next week.

::Background::

Like I said earlier, I used a different technique to relax my hair. Since I started self relaxing in November 2011 I've been applying Silk Elements Mild Relaxer with a pliable squeeze bottle. The one I use is a color applicator bottle from Sally's Beauty Supply. I didn't use it this time because I left it at my mother's house thinking I would relax again when I went back.

The mild relaxer left my hair still very curly, which I liked but now wanted a straighter texlax look. Once my hair is completely texlax I may go back to a curlier version if I am unable to have a decent wash-and-go look, which is my goal for my texlaxed hair.

:: The Relaxing Process ::
NOTE: A photograph summery is posted at the end.

1. Section off hair:
I sectioned my hair into six sections.

2. Protect the length of your hair:
Putting a barrier between your hair and the excess relaxer will slow down the process of relaxing previously relaxed hair. Because you are minimizing overprocessing your hair it will help it remain stronger and have more elasticity.

In order to protect the length of my hair I detangled each section and applied Creme of Nature Lemongrass & Rosemary Leave-in Conditioner. For added protection I finely coated my hair with Petroleum Jelly, focusing on the ends. The ends of the hair are the oldest and weakest part of the hair, so they need as much protection from relaxer runoff as possible. Also I applied the petroleum to my hairline and ears.

3. Optional: Mix Relaxer and Oils/Conditioner:
In order to texlax their hair some people mix oils and conditioners into their relaxer to weaken the strength and allow them more time to apply and process the hair before it becomes completely bone straight.

I mixed 5 spoonfuls of Silk Elements Regular Relaxer, 7 spoonfuls of Silk Elements Mild Relaxer, and 3 spoonfuls of Africa's Best Ultimate Herbal Oil.

4. Apply relaxer to hair:
I suggest first applying the relaxer to the coarsest area of hair. This will allow it to process longer so it can obtain a similar texture to the rest of the hair. Depending on how straight you want your edges will dictate when to apply the relaxer to the hairline. I wanted my edges straighter (almost bone straight basically) so I applied the relaxer to my edges right after applying the relaxer to the front sections of hair but before the back sections.

5. Smooth and Wait
After applying the relaxer throughout the hair smooth the roots if you want a straighter look. I use my fingers to smooth because I feel as though the comb would make it too straight. The entire relaxing process took me 25 minutes this time. This is a record for me!

6. Rinse and Neutralize
Rinse out the relaxer using warm/hot water. Some women like to apply a protein conditioner right before Neutralizing, but I didn't do that this time because I did a hair protein treatment the wash before and didn't want to have an overload. Neutralize with your favorite neutralizing shampoo. I used Silk Elements Megasilk Neutralizing Shampoo for my hair and Isoplus Neutralizing Shampoo for my body. Because I jump into the shower to rinse and neutralize I use a neutralizing shampoo on my body to deactivate the relaxer runoff.

7. pH Balance (optional)
I then used French Perm Stabilizer Plus to balance out the pH of my hair. This product can also be used as a neutralizer, but prefer to use a neutralizing shampoo.

8. Deep Condition
Apply your favorite deep conditioner(s). I used a two step process. First I deep conditioned with a mixture of LeKair Cholesterol and Mane 'n Tail for a light protein. Then I deep conditioned with Ganier Fructis Triple Nutrition Conditioner.

9. Drying
Apply leave-in conditioners, dry hair in whatever fashion you please, and style.

I used Garnier Fructis Daily Care conditioner as my leave in as well as ApHogee Keratin and Green Tea
Restructurizer. I then used the scarf method and air dried my hair because I wasn't planning on straightening my hair.

I have relaxed my hair at eleven weeks and one day. I know that I said I was going to wait, but that was because I was going to keep my Patra Braids in longer. Since I took them out every thing was pushed up a few weeks.

I used a different technique to relax my hair this time, and I don't think I like it. The technique I used is one that most people use and that is using a comb to apply the relaxer. I ended up applying more relaxer to my hair than I normally do so my hair ended up processing bone straight. Another reason for it becoming so straight could be that I mixed Silk Elements Normal with the Mild relaxer in hopes of getting a straighter texlaxed look.

Next time I will be using less of the Normal relaxer and more of the Mild relaxer and will be applying again with my squeeze bottle. The only reason why I didn't use it this go around is because I left it at my mother's house because I wasn't planning on relaxing my hair until I went back for break.

My hair is still very thick, when air dried, because I have a few inches of texlaxed hair. But after this relaxer parts of my hair follow this pattern: Bone Straight --- Texlax (curly/wavy) --- Bone Straight.

It's a good thing that only a small portion of my roots are bone straight and will be easily grown out in a few years. I just have to be careful with my hair because now I have 2 permanent lines of demarcation and when my hair grows in I'll have 3 lines of demarcation. Breakage now is a great possibility, but I'll keep you all posted on what is working and what isn't. Also I'll tell you about the different techniques that help minimize breakage.

<strike>Tomorrow</strike> I'll post about the actual relaxing process. The reason why I'm not posting it now is because I've noticed that some of my post, especially the ones dealing with relaxers, can be very lengthy. I know that you all have a busy life so I want to make each post as simple and too the point as possible. The actually relaxing process is a different topic from the relaxer update so I am making it it's own post. Tell me how you feel about that, and I'll try my best to accommodate everyone.

I have taken down my Patra Braids. I know that I said I was going to take them out the end of this month, but my mom kind of scared me when she reminded me about hair breakage. I didn't want to leave my hair in the braids for a long time and risk my hair breaking. The take down and the wash wasn't too bad and my hair didn't break as much as before.

Braid Take Down Process
1. Section braids into fours

2. Work on 1 section at a time: Remove the braids and detangle with a wide tooth comb a long the way. Use a finer comb or denman/denman-like brush to detangle the roots.

3. Place hair back into the section after all braids have been removed.
Note: For the braids at my edges I sprayed them with Sta-Sof-Fro and detangled with my hands. I did this only if there was a lot of product build up because the comb didn't want to go through and I wasn't about to rip out my edges.

Shampoo Process
1. Work on all four sections separately. Apply shampoo to roots and hold hair midshaft with one hand while the other is massaging the scalp. (If you have long hair then adjust the placement of your hands to a position that is more comfortable. Another thing you can do is braid the hair into a plait.) Periodically run the shampoo throughout the length of the hair to allow it to also be cleaned. I find this useful because it helped prevent my ends from tangling up, which would then cause more breakage.
Note: Shampooing my hair in sections is best option for me because at this point in my hair journey have 3 different hair textures (natural, texlax, and bone straight) and 2 possible points of breakage (both lines of demarcation)

2. After shampooing all four sections use a conditioner of your choice. Gently remove knots using your hands.

Deep Conditioning Process
1. Apply your protein deep conditioner to all the sections of hair and allow it to sit for the recommended time. I used the original Silicon Mix Deep Conditioner and had it sit in my hair for 2-3 minutes. At this point I combined the back two sections of hair because Silicon Mix makes my hair easier to detangle. I still wasn't using a comb to detangle and remove more knots, only my hands.

2. Rinse out your Protein Deep Conditioner and apply your Moisuturizing Deep Conditioner and allow it to sit on your hair for as long as you want. Mine sat in for 2.5 hrs under two plastic bags. You can use only one if you would like.

3. Rinse out the conditioner. and remove hair from sections while also continuing to remove knots that formed from the extension braids.

4. This step is optional: I have porous hair so I bought a new products that I hope would help. I applied a generous amount of French Perm Stabilizer Plus and let it sit in my hair for 1 minute. Rinse out and towel dry hair.
Note: French Perm Stabilizer Plus gives no slippage to the hair so do not use a comb in this process. You may add conditioner to help detangle the hair. When applying French Perm Stabilizer Plus use your hands to run it down the hair shaft and do not rub hair vigorously, otherwise you may cause tangles and ultimately breakage.

Drying
1. Apply your leave-ins. I used ApHogee Keratin and Green Tea Reconstructurizer and Garnier Fructis Daily Care Conditioner

2. Optional: Apply a Straightening Balm

3. Air dry your hair using any method. I just let my hair out because I was going to straightening it.

Straightening
1. Section hair into as many sections as you would like. I used four sections.

2. Apply a heat protectant.

3. Begin straightening small sections of hair with your flat iron and comb. I used both a comb and conair styling brush (depending on the section of hair) to detangle the hair as i ran the straightener through.

Products Used (in the order I used them)
1. Sta-Sof-Fro Moisturizing Spray
2. Cantu Shea Butter Moisturizing Shampoo
3. V05 Conditioner
4. Silicon Mix
5. Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition Fortifying Conditioner
6. French Perm Stabilizer Plus
7. ApHogee Keratin and Green Tea Reconstructurizer
8. Garnier Fructis Daily Care Fortifying Conditioner
9. Garnier Fructis Blow Dry Straightening Balm
10. GVP Silk Remedy
11. Straightener: Infinity Pro by Conair

Since having my Patra Braids in I've done a few hairstyles. The one I'm going to show you today is called Jenna. I wore her last month and she is very simple to do. The only problem I had with her was that she got a bit heavy.

Steps
1. Put hair into a high ponytail.
2. Take a small section of hair and twist around the pony tail.
3. Make a simple braid with the remaining hair.
4. Tuck ends under and bobby pin down.
5. Secure the braid with bobby pins.

I told you it was simple!! If you would like you can use a gel of you liking to slick down your edges.

I've been wearing my Patra Braid for a little more than 4 weeks now. I'm still getting complements on it and people are so shocked that I did them myself. I personally feel like it is a bit too bushy so I'm redoing some of the visible braids, but other than that I really like the look. I've done a few hair styles and have taken a few pictures with my phone and hopefully will be posting them soon.

School has been taking a lot of my time so I haven't been tracking exactly what I've been doing to my hair on a Day-by-Day basis. But what I've basically been doing is moisturizing my hair with Sta-Sof-Fro and then oiling my scalp with my sulfur oil mix. I do this sporadically, only when I notice my scalp feels a little dry or I think I have some extra time to spend on my hair.

I will be trying to keep my hair in these braids for another 6 weeks because the Summer Semester will be over by then and I will have ample time to study for finals. The only problem is that my new growth + the loosening of the braids is about 1 inch at the moment so in another month it could reach 2 inches. If that does happen I'll be forced to take the braids out. An alternative could be to redo my edges and wear my hair in a pony. I'll keep you posted on what I actually decide to do.

As for my actual hair, it seems as though it is thriving well. My new growth is soft from being moisturized. I do not have a dry or itchy scalp, which is always a good thing! When my braids are out I'll be able to give a better review on the health of my hair.

Good Bye For Now!

My braids are finally done!! YAY!!

It took me approximately two days to do them but that was only because I really didn't want to continue once I got to the top of my head. I've gotten complements on them so they look nice even though it was my first time actually doing my entire end full of braids with synthetic hair. (I've done it with yarn and that is so much easier!) I tried sealing the ends by dipping them in hot water but that didn't work. If any of you know how seal braids let me know because I've never had to do that so I have no idea how.

My scalp is feeling a bit dry, so today I plan on spritzing it and sealing with my sulfur oil. Sometime soon I will be posting what regimen I will try to follow for the time that I have my hair in these braids. Then later down the road I would like to do a review/update on how my hair is holding up, whether or not I like the style, and if I will do this style again.

I hope you Friday started well!!

I am currently putting in Jumbo Braids that I will be naming Patra. I think they are actually called Patra Braids but I'm just going to call the hairstyle Patra. I actually stopped braiding my hair so I can tell you how I prepped my hair for the braids.

Steps
1. Shampoo (repeat until lather)
2. Conditioner
3. Detangle under running water with Shower Comb
4. Protein Treatment (1-2 minutes)
5. Deep Conditioning Treatment (LeKair Cholesterol + Mane and Tail Conditioner)
6. Rinse with Cold water
7. Apply Leave-in conditioner
8. Scarf method (not necessary, I just had somewhere to go before I could actually start braiding my hair yesterday)
9. Wrap hair in a microfiber towel and let air dry.
10. When mostly dry spray ApHogee Keratin and Green Tea Restructurizer
11. Moisturize and Seal hair (sections)
12. Detangle (sections)

When my hair is done I'll post pictures on how it looks. So far I like it but we shall see once I get to the top of my head.

I recently updated the way of do my cowashes because I have been using different products. I've used this technique twice now and I am really enjoying the results. After a few more cowashes I'll be able to tell you if there is a difference in my hair's moisture/protein balance.

***********************************************************************************

Products and Tools
1. V05 Conditioner
2. Mane and Tail Conditioner
3. LeKair Cholesterol
4. Jilbere Shower Comb
5. Optional: Denmen Brush

I'm actually using a a Conair that is very similar to the Denmen. I removed the bristles from the brush so that there is only 4 rows of bristles. I did this so that it would reduce the chance of breakage.

Steps
1. Use V05 conditioner to wash hair clean, make sure to massage in a circular motion underneath the hair. Do this step at least twice.
2. During last rinse use shower comb to detangle under running water.
3. Apply LeKair Cholesterol and Mane and Tail Conditioner to hair and let sit for at least 5 minutes. Do not massage hair vigorously because you will cause tangles that that need to be combed out again.
4. Optional: Use Conair/Denmen brush to detangle roots only. [I am transitioning to texlaxed hair so my roots do tangle up a bit while washing.]
5. If ends tangle up again use shower comb to detangle under running water. Add more conditioner if need be.
6. Pat hair dry with a towel.
7. Apply small amount of V05 conditioner to hair.
8. Use scarf method to lay down edges.
9. Place hair in a microfiber towel and air dry.

Results
So far I absolutely LOVE the results. My hair feels so soft afterwards! The detangling process after apply the LeKair Cholesterol and the Mane and Tail Conditioner is so much easier now. The comb glides so much better through my hair.
Hello my Beauties!

My hair is nowhere near where I thought it would be. I should have already passed APL but I feel like my hair growth is in a stunt or something. Yes it's growing but I don't see much added length. One reason might be that I'm transitioning to texlaxed hair. I have about 3 inches of curlies and ohhh how they LOVE to shrink!!

I started texlaxing my hair when I had my first relaxer of 2012 (Refer to my Relaxer Timeline to see when I got my relaxers done and how much time was between each). I am currently using Silk Elements Mild Relaxer. So far I really do like how my hair is turning out. I have EXTREME thickness at my roots, and since I have densely packed hair strands my hair feels like its even thicker than most. So many people keep asking me if I'm going natural and its been getting a tad bit annoying. Mainly because they don't understand the different concepts of taking care of hair so if I tell them no I'm still relaxed they look at me like I'm crazy because I'm purposely making my hair look this way. Either way, I STILL LOVE IT!

I can't wait until I'm able to cut off my straighter ends and have a whole head of texlax curlies and waves. By then my diet should be back to normal so the thinned out area in the back will be filled up. I really believe that the thinning is caused to stress and not eating well (the life of a Biology Major) so I'm trying really hard to remedy that and get back to taking my vitamins.

PS: My camera has been acting up lately so I won't be able to post any really good pictures of my hair. I can try using my cellphone so you have an idea of different hairstyles and my length but they won't be great. Sorry about that.Sanley The Sapfirehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05330885677840069639noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2640145457310446313.post-2279908710789230872012-05-11T12:50:00.004-04:002012-05-11T12:50:57.133-04:00Site Undergoing Construction.Hey beauties!

I'm getting ready to start reconstructing this blog because there are a few changes I want to make. I'll be changing the banner along with some of the pictures posted within the blog posts. The background and color scheme will changing to help make the site more appropriate. Also if I find any previous posts that are either obsolete or irrelevant they will be deleted.

I still want the focus of this blog to be about the health of my hair, but I have decided that I want to post more about hair knowledge. If you remember I wrote about the benefits of sulfur for hair when I was deciding whether or not I wanted to start taking MSM supplements. The post was an informative one which included in-text citations from articles that I read. This allowed for all of you refer to the actual articles that I got my information so you knew that I wasn't making things up. Posting more about hair knowledge will be an easier way of allowing all of us to understand more about our hair.

There may or may not be more alterations involved. If I feel those possible alterations may affect the readers of this blog then I will post about them, if not then those changes will take into effect without prior notice. Please bear with me as I make these changes. Thank you all for your coorperation.

I have been going through a few changes with my hair. When I had my May Relaxer I noticed thinning in the bottom half of my hair, which became much more visible after my August Relaxer. From September all the way through November I wore wigs that I made. I got my 3rd and final relaxer for 2011 the day for Thanks Giving and the thinning isn't as noticeable as before but I gained NO LENGTH. I guess my hair decided to try to fill in the thin spot.

I've decided to make changes to how I am taking care of my hair because what I have been doing isn't helping as much as I would hope.

Relax my hair more frequently (I'm still trying to transition to texlaxed hair)

No more posting a regimen. Instead at the end of the month I will be posting a calendar of what I did (for the most part) during the month. This is to help me figure out what is working and what isn't working, so that way when I do have a new regimen it will be BOMB.

Participating in more challenges that others made up and are heading. (I would love to participate in Hairlista Challenges but the site isn't working for me. Instead I will be participating in more Black Hair Plant Challenges since it was the first site I joined when I started taking care of my hair.)

Because it is finals week I have not had the time to edit pictures to post to the blog. Those will be up soon along with my Relaxer Update and the November 2011 Calendar.
I hope Boarding School is going well. We have a new classmate and her name is Kiki.

My updates:
Well I haven't been taking my vitamins and exercising like I should have because school has been a hassle since starting back up. I just need to make a daily schedual of everything that needs to get done because I follow timed scheduals very well.

It's been a little over a month since my second relaxer of 2011 and my hair has grown a bit. I've actually starting using a whipped shea butter mix I made to moisturize my hair. My new growth feels wonderfully soft but I actually don't think my hair is being moisturized. So I am probably going to start co-washing my hair more while using this and spritzing my hair with filtered water. If you are wondering why I stopped using my Garnier Fructise Leave-in Conditioner to moisturize my hair that is because I ran out. So I was forced to buy the Cream of Nature Leave-in but I'm not sure if I like it since it contains petrolatum, which I believe is a derivitive of petrolium. I'll write a review on it after using it for a bit longer.

At the moment I am reevaluating my regimen. I will be adding an removing different products and techniques. I hope my hair still decides to respond well.
